As King exited the police station, Lenore was standing beside his car, her back turned toward him. As he sauntered to where she stood, he realized she was on her cell phone. When he heard his name being spoken, he came to an abrupt stop, shifting the box in his arms against his hip.

He quickly realized she was talking to someone in her family...about him...and he wasn’t sure whether to walk away or continue to stand there and eavesdrop. Without giving it a second thought, he stood still, the package in his arms just a pound shy of being too heavy to carry. Curiosity planted his feet where he stood. He listened intently, only feeling slightly guilty for the intrusion, and then she wished her mother good-night and turned to find him standing behind her.

Startled, Lenore jumped at the sight of him. “What the hell...” she snapped, her eyes widening.

“Sorry,” King replied. “I didn’t mean to scare you. You were on the phone, and I didn’t want to interrupt.”

“So you stood there listening to my conversation?”

“Yes, I was eavesdropping, but only because you were talking about me.” He grinned broadly, showcasing perfectly white teeth with the hint of a gap between his upper two incisors. He moved to the trunk of his car, lifted the hood and settled the box inside.

Lenore laughed. “You really are a piece of work!”

“You know you would have eavesdropped, too!”

“But I wouldn’t have gotten caught.”

King laughed with her. “I really didn’t mean to frighten you, and I apologize for being rude. But I appreciate all the nice things your mother said about me. I’m even more grateful that you didn’t contradict her.”

“Don’t read too much into that.”

“It just sounded like you might actually like me.”

Lenore laughed again, the sound billowing softly on the tail of an evening breeze. “I still think you might be a jerk. I haven’t made up my mind yet.”

King opened the passenger door and gestured for her to take a seat. “That’s fair,” he said. “I look forward to convincing you that I really am a great guy.”

“Well, you’ll need to start by feeding me. I’m starving.”

“That’s fair,” King said as he slid into the driver’s seat. “How does a platter of forty-plus years of cold murder cases with the same methodology sound?”

Lenore paused, her head snapping in his direction. “Are you serious? Is that what’s in those files restricted to law enforcement?” she asked, the question edged in sarcasm. She inhaled swiftly as he continued.

He nodded. “Allegedly, there’s even an eyewitness statement for dessert.”

Processing the comment, Lenore shook her head. Her eyes were wide, and it was something like shock that washed over her. She pressed a hand to her chest, her fingers clutched tightly as if she held on to a strand of pearls. She bit down against her bottom lip before she finally spoke. “You keep talking dirty to me, Detective Randolph, and I might actually have to be nice to you!”

King laughed as he cut his eyes in her direction.
